The Syracuse Stars (A) Eastern League team travelled to New Hampshire and played the Monarchs last weekend. Both teams were coming off a bye week for the Thanksgiving holiday with the Stars having a slim 3 point lead over the Monarchs.
Saturday’s game was a tight back and forth contest as the Monarchs edged the Stars, 3-2. All the scoring occurred in the second period. The Monarchs got on the board first with a goal from Brooks Herrington at 6:38. Adam Graff’s power play goal tied the game at 1-1at 9:11. Three minutes later the Monarchs regained the lead on Pat Doherty’s goal. Once again a little over a minute later the Stars tied the game on a goal from Ryan Farnan. The game continued tied but with just 14 seconds remaining in the period Herrington scored his second goal of the game on the power play beating the Stars Goaltender Joe Dawson to close out the scoring. Dawson suffered his first loss of the season after coming into the game with an 8-0-2 record.
The Stars were hoping for a different outcome for the game on Sunday to earn a split and keep their lead in the Eastern League’s Northern Division. New Hampshire dominated the first half of the game as they scored 4 straight goals against Stars goalie Anthony Cadieux before he was replaced. The Stars goals came from Jeremy Schaffel, Mike Montagna (shorthanded), and Adam Graff as the Monarchs beat the Stars, 7-3. Losing both games the Stars fell into second place in the Northern Division one point behind the Monarchs.
The Stars A and B teams will both be traveling to Fitchburg, MA this weekend to participate in the Huskies Showcase.
