Stars (B) Sweep Away the Jackals
The Syracuse Stars B team continued their winning ways at home on Saturday as they defeated the Elmira Jr. Jackals, 6-2. Power play goals from Zach O'Mara and Derrick Eccles in the first period gave the Stars an early 2-0. Elmira cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal from Matt Murray. Syracuse then regained their two goal advantage on Corey Drozdz goal just before the first period ended. Bill Kent's goal late in the second period gave the Stars a comfortable 4-1 lead going into the third period. Kevin Burke's power play goal early in the third cut the Stars lead in half to 4-2. The Stars then closed out the scoring on two power play goals from Jared Lehman and James Cathers to earn the win.
In Sunday’s game Cathers was a one man wrecking crew for the Syracuse Stars B team as they defeated the Elmira Jr. Jackals, 6-1. Cathers recorded the team's first hat trick of the season and also had two assists for the game. His first goal came 33 seconds into the game but the Jackals' Tyler Spencer tied it about a minute later. The only goal of the second period was Cathers 2nd goal on a power play. The game remained close but then with just over 8 minutes remaining the Stars went on a scoring binge. Bill Kent's goal from Zach O'Mara and Cathers made the score 3-1. Twenty-four seconds later Cathers got his hat trick with assists from O'Mara and Myles Gaines making it 4-1. Christian Powell's goal with the assist from Cathers with 6:13 remaining made it 5-1. Then with just :49 remaining Derrick Eccles had a breakaway on the Elmira goaltender, Johnny Daum, but Elmira penalized him earning a penalty shot opportunity. Elmira decided to change goaltenders before the penalty shot but Eccles still converted the shot to give the Stars a 6-1 win. With the sweep of Elmira this weekend the Stars extended their winning streak to three games.
The Stars B team will have this weekend off. They resume Empire League action at the Fitchburg, MA tournament the weekend of December 12-13.
Syracuse Stars (A) Eastern League team had a well deserved weekend off for the holiday. They resume league action this weekend as they travel to New Hampshire to take on the Monarchs.
