Stars (A) Rise and Fall To Kings
The first place Stars (A) team downed the South Shore Kings, 4-2 on Saturday afternoon. Syracuse got on the board first from the league's leading scorer Matt Wilson to give the Stars a 1-0 lead after the first period. South Shore tied the game early in the second on a goal from Chris Wagner. Syracuse then took the lead again midway in the period on John Hero's goal. Trailing 2-1 going into the third the Kings tied the game at 2-2 with a goal from Nolan
Descoteaux at the 7:23 mark. The Stars then came back twenty-two seconds later on a goal from Chris Cannizzaro who received a beautiful lead pass from Rob Morton. Syracuse then added an insurance goal three minutes later from Joe Wilson to close out the scoring.
Sunday’s game the South Shore Kings scored early and often as they defeated the Syracuse Stars (A) team, 6-4. The Kings special teams play was special as they scored 4 power play goals along with a shorthanded one. First period goals by Hugo Margoc (power play) and Casey Terreri (shorthanded) gave the Kings a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission. The Stars cut the deficit to one on Joe Wilson's power play goal early in the second. South Shore increased their lead to two on Dan Smolinsky's power play goal midway in the period.
Syracuse cut the lead to 3-2 on a beautiful behind the back shot by Matt Wilson that went by Kings Goaltender Doug Carr. Mike Lysyj tallied two goals before the second period ended to give the Kings a commanding 5-2 lead after two. Joe Wilson's second goal of the game two minutes into the period cut the Kings lead to two. Carr came up with some outstanding saves to maintain his team's two goal lead. Then with 1:46 remaining in the game a goal from Richard Woodworth sealed the victory for the Kings. Chris Cannizzaro's goal with :23 remaining was not enough as the Stars fell to the Kings and saw their 4 game winning streak come to an end.
The Stars (A) team will resume their Eastern League schedule when they travel to New Hampshire the weekend of December 6-7 to take on the Monarchs.
Stars (B) Split on the Road
The young Stars (B) team has struggled this season but gained some needed maturity as they split their two game series against the Brewster Bulldogs in Connecticut.
In Saturday’s game the Stars fell behind early as the Bulldogs scored the first three goals of the game. Fred House did put the Stars on the board with an unassisted goal before the first period ended. Brewster scored two goals in the second period to take a 6-1 lead into the final period. James Cathers had an unassisted goal for the Stars in the third as each team exchanged goals in the final stanza to make the score 7-2 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Sunday’s game was a complete opposite from Saturday’s. The Stars took an early lead on a power play goal from Mason Richardson at 3:21 of the game. Six minutes later the Bulldogs knotted the game at 1-1 on a goal from Chris Francaviglia. The Stars then scored three straight goals in the final 9:00 of the first to take a 4-1 lead into the intermission break. Scoring the goals for the Stars were Bill Kent, Marko Novosel, and Zach White. Brewster made the game interesting in the second as they scored three goals in the period. Goals were from Ray Potestio and two from Chris Doyle but the lone Stars goal in the period from James Cathers still gave the Stars a slim 5-4 lead after two. Each team scored a pair of goals in the final period with the Stars picking up the win at 7-6. Syracuse goals in the third were from Jared Lehman and Novosel’s second of the game which was the game winner.
The Stars (B) team returns home this weekend to take on the Elmira Jr. Jackals at the Onondaga Nation Arena.
