LOSS WEEKEND FOR STARS (A)
The Stars (A) team travelled to Haverhill, MA this past weekend for games against the host Valley Jr. Warriors, Capital District Selects and Applecore. In their first game on Friday night against the Warriors the Stars fell 2-1 in overtime. Scoring the lone goal for the Stars was Mike Zalewski.
The Stars were looking to get back on track on Saturday playing two games. Capital District was the first opponent of the day. The Selects seem to have the Stars number as they scored four unanswered goals in the first half to take a 4-0 lead into the intermission. The second half started like the first as Capital District built up a 5-0 lead. The Stars did stage a comeback midway in the half with goals from Josh Larose, Joe Wilson, Zack Marginsky and Ryan Farnan to make the score 5-4 with just :57 left. The Stars then pulled their goaltender to have the added attacker but that strategy failed as the Selects ended the scoring with an empty net goal with four seconds remaining to make the final 6-4. The Stars are thankful that this would be the final time this season that they have to face the Selects.
Capital District has a record of 4-14-1-1 for a total of 10 points with half of their wins and points (2-1-1) against the Stars.
In the final game of the weekend against Applecore the Stars jumped out to quick 2-0 lead on goals from Joe Wilson and Brendon Rothfuss. Applecore then scored four straight goals to take a commanding 4-2 lead. Wilson’s second goal of the game just before the first half ended made it a 4-3 game at the half in favor of Applecore. In the second half Applecore scored the first two goals to increase their lead to 6-3. Syracuse goals by Justin Bruckel and Ryan Farnan got them back to within a goal, 6-5, but a later Applecore goal finished the scoring and gave Applecore a 7-5 win.
Despite picking up just one point over the weekend the Stars still remain in second place just two points in front of Green Mountain. The Stars travel this weekend to Foxboro to take on the South Shore Kings for a two game series.
