Stars Split Weekend Series with Junior Bruins
Syracuse bounced back from last weekend taking 3 out of 4 points in a classic weekend showdown with the Boston Junior Bruins.
Brendan Wharity's goal at 15:15 in the 2nd period proved to be enough on Saturday as Syracuse edged the Jr. Bruins, 1-0. Wharity's unassisted goal came as he picked up the loose puck after Boston's defense turned it over at their own blue line and beat Jr. Bruins goaltender Connor Knapp for the game’s only goal. Stars goaltender Chris Noonan was outstanding as he earned his first shutout of the season. With the victory the Stars snapped their 3 game losing steak and increased their lead in the Eastern League's Northern Division over the Jr. Bruins.
On Sunday Syracuse was 4.2 seconds away from sweeping the Jr. Bruins before Boston’s Steve Morra scored his second goal of the game forcing the game into overtime. Cam Lanoue's goal at 1:41 in overtime helped the Boston Jr. Bruins cap off a late game comeback as they defeated Syracuse, 4-3. Syracuse jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd period on goals from Jared Williams and Matias Nyberg. The Jr. Bruins cut the Stars lead in half when Bryan Kriner scored 45 seconds after the Nyberg goal. Boston tied the game at 2-2 early in the 3rd on Morra's first goal of the game. The Stars regained the lead on Alex Durinka's goal with just under 7 minutes left in the game but the lead was spoiled as Morra tied it up at 3-3 with 4.2 seconds left in the game sending it into overtime.
