Stars Split in Vermont Ending 13-Game Unbeaten Streak
After a 4-3 victory over the Green Mountain Glades last Sunday, Syracuse knew they had there work cut out for them heading into Vermont for a two game series.
Saturday’s contest saw a similar result as both teams battled head to head as the Stars pulled out another 4-3 victory. Syracuse’s Alex Durinka opened the scoring in the first period with a power play goal assisted by Trevor Lewis and Dan Lassik. The Glades answered back with two first period goals of their own by Brett Braizer and Riley Wetmore giving the Glades a 2-1 lead heading into the second period. Syracuse responded with the only goal of the period as Matt Wilson scored assisted by Dan Ford to tie the game at two. Syracuse came out in the third period and jumped a head 4-2 on goals by Chris Cannizarro, assisted by Trevor Lewis and Matt Wislon, and an unassisted goal by Mark Zengerle. The Glades came within one on a power play goal by Wetmore but the Stars were able to hold on to win 4-3.
After two close one-goal losses against the first place Syracuse Stars, the Green Mountain Glades finally ended the Stars’ 13-game unbeaten streak (10-0-3) on Sunday with a 4-2 victory.
It was the Glades who got on the board first at 9:14 of the first period when Dan Evarts’ slap shot off the cross bar from the blue line beat Stars goalie Mark Stuart (23 saves).
The Stars would answer back with a power-play goal at 14:45 when defenseman Dan Lassik’s shot beat Sam Avoine (16 saves) on a screened shot from the blue line.
With 2:49 left in the first period, Mark Collins gave the Glades a 2-1 lead when he beat Stuart while walking out of the corner.
Peter Rohn gave the Glades a 2 goal lead at 4:46 of the second period when he deflected a pass from Mark Collins over Stuart’s shoulder.
The Stars would capitalize again on the power play when Chris Cannizarro deflected a shot from the blue line by Dan Ford to make it 3-2 with less than 4 minutes to go in the second period.
Both teams played well defensively in the third period and despite a strong effort from the Stars to try to even up the score, it wasn’t until Peter Rohn’s second goal of the game on an empty netter with 25 seconds left to play that the Glades could finally enjoy the upset.
