Stars (A) Sweep on the Road
The Stars traveled to Tyngsboro, MA this past weekend and swept the two game series against the Huskies.
Saturday’s game saw the Stars get on the scoreboard first on a goal from Matt Wilson early in the second period. The Huskies then tied the game at 1-1 eighteen seconds later on Trevor Lawler’s goal. Goals by the Stars Mike Montagna and Rob Morton gave the Stars a 3-1 lead early in the third period. The Huskies stormed back mid-way in the period on power play goals from Mike Richard and Sabastion Kimmel in the matter of thirty-eight seconds. With the game tied at 3-3 it appeared that the game was headed into overtime but with ten seconds left and the Stars on the power play, Matt Wilson scored his second goal of the game to give the Stars the 4-3 win.
Sunday’s game the Huskies took an early 2-0 lead on goals by Mike Richard and Colin Hoey. Syracuse then rallied back on goals from Joey Wilson and veteran Chris Cannizzaro to tie the game at 2-2. The Huskies then regained the lead just before the second intermission, 3-2, on Richard’s second goal of the game. In the third period it was all Stars. Goals by Matt Wilson, Mike Montagna, and a power play goal from Rob Morton gave the Stars the 5-3 victory and a sweep of the Huskies.
The Stars come home this weekend to take on the Boston Jr. Shamrocks on Saturday and Sunday at the Onondaga Nation Arena in a tie for first place with the Boston Junior Bruins.
Stars (B) Snap Losing Streak
The Syracuse Stars B team came home and played two non-league games against the Jersey Hitmen (U19) team last weekend. Saturday’s game started off well for the Stars as they took the early lead on two Billy Kent goals in the first period but before the period ended the Hitmen had tied the game at 2-2. Syracuse took the lead again early in the second on an Eric Geertz goal but this was the last lead for the Stars as the Hitmen scored 5 unanswered goals to win the game, 7-3 to extend the Stars losing streak to 11 games.
The Stars B team then snapped an eleven game losing streak on Sunday as they downed the Jersey Hitmen (U19) team, 7-5. Jersey scored first on a goal from Scott Steinel at 5:22. Syracuse stormed back on goals from Christian Powell and Eric Geertz as the first period ended with the Stars up 2-1. In the second period each team exchanged goals with the Stars goal coming from the recent addition, Matt Esposito. The Stars broke the game open in the first eight minutes of the third as they built up a 6-2 lead. Scoring for the Stars were Devin Coon, Andrew Kremer, and Jared Lehman. The Hitmen battled back to make the game very interesting, scoring two goals in a matter of a minute and a half from Chris Taminga and Vinny Lopes to cut the Stars lead to 6-4. James Cathers' unassisted goal at 13:35 gave the Stars a three goal lead before Steinel's second goal of the game making the final score 7-5. Next game for the Stars B team will be against the Syracuse University Club team.
