Akers Leads Stars To Weekend
Sweep Over Huskies


Kurt AkersKurt Akers’ hat trick, two of them short-handed goals, was all that Syracuse needed as they defeated the New England Huskies 7-1 in the opening game of the weekend series. Chris Cannizarro added two goals and Jared Williams and Doug Marshall each scored one to lead the undefeated Stars to their seventh win of the season. Stars Goaltender Marc Stuart showed why he was selected as the Eastern League's Defensive Player of the Week by making 22 saves.

On Sunday Akers was at it again scoring at 3:35 in overtime lifting Syracuse to another overtime win as they defeated the New England Huskies, 5-4. The Stars have already been in 5 overtime games, winning 4 and earning a tie in the other. The Stars got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Chris Cannizarro early in the first period. The Huskies tied the game at 1-1 with Trevor Lawler's goal with just :19 left in the first. Goals by Syracuse’s Trevor Lewis and another one from Cannizarro gave the Stars a 3-1 lead early in the second period. The Huskies, who are still looking for their first win of the season, rallied late in the period and scored twice in a matter of :35 with goals from Brian Nehring and Brandon Bradley. New England took the lead midway in the third on Joe Caveney's goal and held the lead for about 8 minutes before the Syracuse’s Brendan Wharity scored to tie the game and forced the game into overtime.

The Stars continue to lead the Eastern League's Northern Division with a 8-0-1-0 record. Syracuse will travel to New Hampshire next weekend to play in the Jr. Monarchs Fall Classic tournament.
