Stars Teams Begin 2009-10 Campaign
Stars (A) Have Good Opening Weekend
The Stars (A) team opened their 2009-10 season in the Boston Jr. Bruins Tourney. In their first game they battled the host Bruins to a 3-3 overtime tie. Ryan Farnan got the Stars first goal of the season three minutes into the game to give them the early lead. Colin Downey’s goal a little over a minute later tied the game at 1-1 to close out the scoring in the first half. The second half began just like the first as the Stars took a 2-1 lead on a goal from John Hero at 2:35. A power play goal from the Bruins Joe Pendenza at 8:20 tied the game at 2-2. The Bruins took their only lead of the game on Zach Sandonato’s goal with just 7:30 remaining in the contest. The Stars rallied back and tied the game on Adam Graff’s goal with 4:15 left in regulation. Both teams battled to no avail in overtime as the game ended in a tie.
The Bridgewater Bandits were the Stars next opponent and they defeated the Stars 4-1. Chris Boyd gave the Bandits a 1-0 lead midway in the first half. Josh Larose’s goal late in the first half tied the game at 1-1 as the teams went into the intermission. In the second half it was all the Bandits as they scored goals from Ryan Edwards, Charles Stellabotte, and John Sperzel to seal the Bridgewater victory.
In their final game of the Jr. Bruins Tourney it was all Stars as they defeated the New England Huskies 7-0. Seven different players, Joe Wilson, Ryan Farnan, Josh Larose, Justin Bruckel, John Hero, Mike Zalewski, and Mike Montagna scored to lead them to the victory. Stars Goaltender Eric Sorenson made 19 saves to earn the shutout.
The Stars comes home with a 1-1-1 record to open their home portion of the EJHL schedule this weekend. They host the Bridgewater Bandits at the Onondaga Nation Arena in Nedrow, NY and look for revenge for their only loss to them. Game times are 4:00 PM on Saturday and 11:00 AM on Sunday.
Stars (B) Even Their Record
The Stars (B) team began their Empire League season with the Woodchuck Tourney and were defeated by the New Hampshire Monarchs 4-1 and losing to the Boston Jr. Bruins 6-2. This past weekend in the Jr. Bruins Tourney the Stars won both of their games to even their league record at 2-2.
The Stars opened this past weekend with a 4-2 win over the Valley Jr. Warriors. Derrick Eccles scored the only goal of the first half to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. The Stars increased their lead to 3-0 as Dan DelZoppo and Melvin Nichols scored in a matter of 41 seconds. Valley rallied back midway in the half on goals from Ryan Sargent and Taylor Juneau to make it a 3-2 game. With a minute remaining in the game the Jr. Warriors pulled their goaltender for the added attacker but with eight seconds remaining Zach O’Mara’s empty net goal gave the Stars a 4-2 win.
Saturday’s game almost appeared to be a carbon copy of Friday’s game as the Stars again scored 4 goals and defeated the South Shore Kings 4-2. Derrick Eccles again scored the only goal in the first half to give the Stars the early 1-0 lead. Syracuse held on to that lead until the King’s Rob Fenchel scored with 6:28 left in the game. Less than a minute later the King’s took a 2-1 lead on a goal from Brendan Carroll. The Stars rallied back to tie the game on Zach O’Mara’s power play goal with 2:44 left. Marko Novosel scored fifty-five seconds later which proved to be the game winner. Bill Kent closed out the scoring for the Stars with just twenty-four seconds remaining to make the final 4-2. The Stars scored the final three goals of the game in less than 3 minutes to give them the victory.
This weekend the Stars (B) team will travel to Brewster, NY to take on the Bulldogs.
