rob mortonSTARS ROB MORTON HEADS TO MERRIMACK

The Syracuse Stars Jr. A team is thrilled to announce that Rob Morton, the leading goal scorer in the EJHL this past season, has committed to the Merrimack University Warriors for the 2009-2010 season. Rob led the EJHL not only in goals scored but Game Winning Goals (7) as well. He finished 5th overall in EJHL scoring with 36 goals and 27 assists for 63 points in leading the Stars to a 4th place overall finish in the highly competitive EJHL.

Coach Scott Montagna of Syracuse was thrilled when he heard the news. "Rob has definitely earned this and the Warriors are getting just that, a true Warrior. Rob came back as an ‘88 this season with the goal in mind to earn a chance to play Division 1 college hockey. He did that in spades this year." Morton from Utica, NY joined the Stars 3 years ago and put in the hard work and effort necessary to get the chance to compete in Hockey East. He moved up quickly from the Jr. C team at the time he first started competing with the Stars and over the last 2 seasons has been a mainstay on the Jr. A Stars top line.

Coach Montagna added a few more comments about him. "Morty was a true leader for us in every way this season. He worked hard every practice, is always one of the first guys on the ice and last guys off. As a team Captain our younger guys had someone they could really look up to. Rob always put the work in extra practice, the weight room, shooting room time. He was always pushing himself to get better. Merrimack, in my opinion, got a player who will become one of their leaders both on and off the ice. I truly believe that about Rob. Coaches Dennehy, Roy and Yopyk are going to be thrilled with what Rob will bring to their program and I know Rob and our program our very sincere in our thanks to them for giving him the opportunity to be a Warrior."

Rob is truly excited to have the chance to play at Merrimack and be a part of Hockey East. He stated that he really enjoyed his visit to Merrimack and felt it was the best choice for him as he had a tough decision to make as many schools really came after him after a strong finish to the season and a very good 2 playoff games in front of a ton of college scouts. Rob is a player who the Stars coaches feel is only going to get better. Especially with the time, effort and desire he puts into hockey and improving his game.

This makes the 5th Star's player from this season’s team to get a D1 commitment and Don Kirnan and the rest of the organization could not be more pleased. "We are really looking forward to seeing Morty in Warrior Blue and Gold next season."

Rob is the son of Bob and Rose Morton and without their support Rob would not have reached his dream of getting the chance to play Division 1 college hockey. So Rob wanted to make sure he thanked them here.
