STARS (B) UPSET MAKSYMUM; ADVANCE TO FINAL 4
The Syracuse Stars B team the 6th seed in the American Conference upset the number one seed Maksymum Juniors 5-3 on Sunday to advance to the final 4 of the Empire Junior Hockey League's playoffs. The Stars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a power play goal from James Cathers at 5:32 of the first period. Maksymum then came back with goals from Brandon Rothfuss and Mike Broccolo to close out the first period with Maksymum up 2-1. Midway in the second period the Stars tied the game at 2-2 on a goal from Mick Sicchio. Maksymum regained the lead about three minutes later on John Mousso's goal. Just before the period ended the Stars tied the game again on a power play goal from Ben Lewis. The Stars took the lead for good at 7:28 into the third period on an unassisted power play goal from Lewis. Jimmy Forbes empty net goal with :40 left in the game gave the Stars the victory and a two game sweep of Maksymum to advance to the Empire League's semi-finals next weekend in Marlboro, MA.
In game one of the series, played on Saturday, the Stars defeated the Maksymum Juniors 5-4. Maksymum (34-7-2-1) finished the regular season with the second best record in the Empire League, gave up a goal to the Stars Dillon Black with 1:32 left in the first period to fall behind 1-0. Maksymum then tied the game midway in the second period on Mike Broccolo's goal. The Stars then tallied three straight goals from James Cathers, Jimmy Forbes, and Tre Berg to take a commanding 4-1 lead with 16 minutes remaining in the game. Maksymum then showed why they were one of the top teams in the Empire League as they rallied with three goals of their own from John Mousso, Jonathan Sucese and another goal from Broccolo to tie the game with just :40 left to force the game into overtime. Cathers goal, his second of the game, at 2:09 in overtime gave the Stars a 5-4 victory.
