Stars (B) Sweep Into Third
The Syracuse Stars B team travelled to Buffalo and swept the two game series and advanced into third place of the Empire League’s Western Division.
In Saturday’s game the Stars only needed two goals to defeat the Buff Stars 2-0. Scoring for the B team were Devin Coon and the team’s leading scorer, James Cathers. Goaltender Kollyn Jones made 27 saves to even his record at 7-7 and also picked up the team’s first shutout of the season.
Sunday’s game had the B team rally from a two goal deficit after the first period to defeat Buffalo, 3-2. Frank Buttino and TJ Giczkowski scored for Buffalo to give them the early lead. The Stars B team started their comeback as Zach O’Mara scored the only goal of the second period to cut Buffalo’s lead to 2-1. Myles Gaines’ shorthanded goal with just under 10 minutes remaining tied the game at 2-2. Dan Delzoppo’s goal about four minutes later proved to be the game winner as Syracuse topped Buffalo 3-2. With the two game sweep Syracuse moved ahead of Buffalo into third place three points ahead of them. Syracuse closes out the regular season as they travel to the Albany area to take on the Jersey Wildcats, New England Huskies, and the Valley Jr. Warriors. Syracuse needs only two points this weekend to clinch third place.
Stars (A) End Regular Season With A Split
The Syracuse Stars A team and the Valley Jr. Warriors split the two games weekend series by scores of 5-3. Saturday’s game had five different Stars players tallying goals to defeat the Jr. Warriors. Joe Wilson and John Hero lead the Stars attack adding two assists along with their goals. Other goal scorers for the Stars were Rob Morton (one assist), Chris Cannizzaro and Adam Graff. Stars goaltender Eric Sorenson made 29 saves in his 6th game of the season and picked up his 3rd win.
The tables were turned in Sunday’s game as the Jr. Warriors jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period. Ryan Farnan’s goal with just :24 left in the first cut the Warrior lead to 2-1 as the first period ended. The Warriors then scored two goals in the second to take a commanding 4-1 lead after two. Rounding out the Stars scoring were Farnan scoring his second of the game and by Dillon Black.
The Stars begin their Eastern League playoff series against the Bridgewater Bandits this weekend in Foxboro, MA.
In their only game on Saturday the Stars were able to overcome a hat trick by Springfield’s Dustin Ryder to defeat the Falcons 4-3. Leading the way for the Stars were Joe Wilson (two goals), Chris Cannizzaro and Rob Morton.
Sunday’s early game was against the Jersey Hitmen who are one of the top teams in the league. Jersey dominated the game as they shutout the Stars 6-0. This was the second time this season that the Hitmen were able to shutout the Stars. Sunday’s later game the Stars edged the Bay State Breakers 5-4. Matt Wilson led the Stars with his first hat trick of the season. Brian Roller and Dillon Black tallied the other two goals.
The Stars (A) return home this weekend to conclude their regular season against the Valley Jr. Warriors.
