Stars (A) Sweep The Huskies
The Stars A team swept the weekend series against the New England Huskies and in doing so clinched a playoff spot for the upcoming Eastern League playoffs. In Saturday’s game Mike Montagna's hat trick led the team to a 6-4 come from behind victory over the Huskies. Montagna scored his first goal a little over a minute into the game to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. New England then scored three straight goals to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead going into the first intermission. Syracuse then scored the only goals of the second period from Matt Wilson and Rob Morton to tie the game 3-3 after two. The Stars then put the game in the win column as Montagna tallied two goals and another one from Wilson to give the Stars the 6-4 victory.
On Sunday it was the Rob Morton and Joe Dawson show. Morton scored both goals and that was all the Stars needed as they defeated the Huskies, 2-0. Goaltender Dawson played probably his best game of the season as he made 40 saves and earned the team's first shutout of the season.
With the two game sweep the Stars now have a three game winning streak as they head into Foxboro for the South Shore tournament. The Stars final regular season road trip will be a busy one as they play 5 games over a three day span. They will take on the Boston Junior Bruins, New England Falcons, Jersey Hitmen, Bay State Breakers, and the South Shore Kings.
Stars (B) and Maksymum Earn A Split
The Stars B team and the Maksymum Selects earned a split of their two game weekend series. On Saturday Maksymum's Brett Barton's power play goal early in the third period proved to be the game winner as they defeated the Stars 2-1. Brendon Rothfuss, the league's leading scorer, gave the Selects the early lead with the only goal in the first period. The Stars tied the game in the second on a goal from Bill Kent. The Stars Kollyn Jones played a strong game in nets despite the lost making 32 saves.
In Sunday’s game the Stars earned the split as James Cathers, Zach O'Mara and Jared Lehman each scored a pair of goals as the Stars defeated the Maksymum (Rochester) Selects, 8-3. Also contributing to the victory were Bill Kent (one goal, four assists), Mason Richardson (one goal), and Devin Coon (three assists). The Stars sealed the win by scoring four unanswered goals, three of them on the power play, in the third period.
