Stars Split Weekend Series With NH Jr. Monarchs
Syracuse’s weekend series with the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs at the Eastern Winter Showcase this past weekend had all the makings of a classic showdown between two teams battling at the top of the Northern Division.
On Friday, both teams lived up to all expectations as they battled back and forth in a game that saw Syracuse come from behind to beat New Hampshire 4-3 in overtime. New Hampshire opened the scoring with a power play goal in the first and then went ahead 2-0 as they scored :09 seconds into the second. But Syracuse answered back with two Mark Zengerle goals to even the score at 2-2. New Hampshire scored again to take the lead but Syracuse’s Mike Baran found the back of the net to tie it up at 3-3 sending the game into overtime. Syracuse’s Dan Lassik put the game away scoring at the 2:03 mark in overtime. Syracuse goaltender Chris Noonan was outstanding in net for the Stars.
Saturday’s game saw a different result as New Hampshire beat Syracuse 5-1. New Hampshire’s Yuri Bouharevich had a stellar performance scoring 4 of New Hampshire’s 5 goals. Syracuse’s lone goal was scored by Kurt Akers. Syracuse remains at the top of the Northern Division with an 18-6-4-1 record.
